Watching the masses gravitate
Towards violence, cruelty and hate
I cannot help but wonder
As to what spell they are put under
That steals the vision from their eyes
And sends them into ugly tides

Is it choice, or basic instinct,
That sends them all to the brink?

A clenched fist, a spitting threat
Captures them, like fish in a net
They gaze on in a gawping stare
Gormless idiots, too weak to care
Too scared to step away from the swarm
And break away from the hostile norm

They stand, transfixed, at the bloody scene
Whilst all the while, hidden and unseen
Lies a whole other world
Concealed as a glimmering pearl
And to me, this contains twice the gravity
Of any of their violent insanity

But they don't gravitate to the wispy clouds that line the sky, or to the warm soup on a Winter's day. They don't gravitate to the kindness of an unknown stranger or to the smile on a child's face. They don't gravitate to the mountains that line the horizon or to a person in true need. And this, I shall never understand.
This was inspired by the sight I saw walking out of school today. There was a fist-fight going on on the field and as usual, at least a good hundred people were crowded around them, all shouting and wanting a piece of the action.
And I watched it form- how it starts off as a small group, but then more and more people somehow get pulled towards it until it's nothing but a great swarming mass of blood-thirsty bodies...
It's a such a commonplace sight but I just found myself wondering what it is that attracts everyone to violence and hatred, when we are surrounded by such beauty all the time...
Bah, stupid kids. XD

Very impressive. I'm not one for poems that rhyme, but you've managed to pull it off, quite nicely.

Well done. :-)
